Extrait de Parfum vs. Eau de Parfum: What Is the Difference?

Short answer: an Extrait de Parfum contains more perfume oil than an Eau de Parfum. That usually means a denser, closer texture and a slower development on skin. It does not automatically mean a louder fragrance.

What the names mean

Fragrance names describe concentration, meaning the share of perfume oil dissolved in alcohol. There is no binding legal definition, so ranges differ between houses. Typical ranges are:

  • Eau de Cologne: roughly 2 to 5 %
  • Eau de Toilette: roughly 5 to 15 %
  • Eau de Parfum: roughly 15 to 20 %
  • Extrait de Parfum (also called Parfum or Extrait): usually 20 % and above

Every Grace’ Routine fragrance is an Extrait de Parfum with 30 % perfume oil.

What a higher concentration changes

  • Texture: more oil and less alcohol make the opening softer and less sharp.
  • Development: top, heart and base notes unfold more slowly, so a fragrance changes over the day rather than in the first minutes.
  • Fewer sprays: one or two sprays are often enough.

What it does not guarantee

How long and how far a fragrance carries depends on its ingredients, your skin, temperature and how you apply it. Fresh, mineral notes sit closer to the skin than amber or woods, even at the same concentration. A higher concentration is a different character, not a promise of a fixed number of hours.

How to apply an Extrait

  • Spray onto moisturised skin: wrists, neck, inner elbows.
  • Do not rub. Let it dry on its own.
  • Start with one spray and add a second after an hour if you want more presence.

Try before you choose a flacon

The Discovery Set contains SALINE, AURÉE and VELIN as 2 ml Extraits de Parfum, so you can wear each one for a full day before choosing a 50 ml or 100 ml flacon.
